Wyite Butler

Wyite “Pops” Butler, 92, of Belton passed peacefully in his home on Friday, February 23, 2024.

He was born on April 26, 1931, in Bell County, the son of Wyite Butler Sr and Emma (Drake) Butler.

Pops married his sweetheart Dorothy Etta Thompson on June 30, 1952, and they were married 72 years. They had six children, Randy Butler of Belton, Connie Stermer and husband AJ of Belton, Mickey Butler and wife Lisa of Belton, Terry Butler, Marsha Winkler and David of Belton, and Tina Butler and Lee Carson of Briggs along with 16 Grandchildren and 33 Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his 5 sisters and great grandson Jace Jefferson.

He worked for Cen-Tex Ready Mix most of his adult life and after retiring he found his true calling in making Custom Hats. Butlers Hatters was founded in 1979 where he started the business of cleaning and rebuilding older hats as well as making custom hats. His passion for hats was second to none and he enjoyed talking… and talking shop with anyone that dropped in and could recognize one of his hats on anyone’s head.

Pops gave his life to the Lord in 2019 @ Maxdale Cowboy Church in Killeen. He served 2 years as President of the Belton Riding & Roping Club as well as a founding member of the Temple Longhorn Riding Club He was also a Bell County Cowboy Cowgirl Hall of Fame Inductee. He enjoyed watching all his kids growing up participating in horse shows, rodeos, and barrel races. In later years he enjoyed spending his time at the baseball and football field supporting his Grand and Great-Grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 1, at Belton Church of Christ, 3003 N Main St, Belton with visitation being held at Dossman Funeral Home Chapel Thursday, February 29, 5 – 8 p.m.  Burial to follow service at Moffat Cemetery.

If preferred, charitable contribution in lieu of flowers can be made to the Bell County Cowboy Cowgirl Hall of Fame or Maxdale Cowboy Church in Killeen.
