Born in Temple in 1934, Tempe grew up on the Griffith farm in Salado where he worked the land with his grandfather, mother, father, sister, and other members of the family. Tempe graduated from Salado High School in 1953 and attended West Texas State University, now West Texas A&M University Canyon on a football scholarship. Tempe entered military service with the United States Army in 1958 and, after basic training at Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas, was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. There, in a post coffee shop, he met the loveliest woman he had ever seen, Lois Smith. Tempe and Lois were married in 1961 in Radcliff, Kentucky. They were seldom apart for the next 62 years. After completing his military service in 1962, Tempe went to work for Olin Chemical Corporation in Brandenburg, Ky. He retired as Maintenance Manager from Olin in 1990 after 28 years of employment. Tempe and Lois sold their home in Kentucky and for the next ten years travelled by RV across the United States, seeking cool mountains during the summer and warmer climates during the winter. In 2001, they built a new home on the old family farm and enjoyed life in Salado. Tempe was an avid music fan of almost all types of music, with special love for ragtime piano, classical Spanish guitar, gospel singing quartets with good, low bass, and beautiful voices of all types. He loved to photograph the natural beauty of the western United States and hunt for rocks to cut and make gorgeous jewelry for his family as part of his lapidary hobby. Tempe loved reading travel magazines and the western novels of Zane Grey, but his greatest love of all was to spend time with his family and close friends. Tempe was a member of Fifteenth Street Church of Christ in Temple . Tempe was preceded in death by mother Susie Griffith Cabaniss of Salado, father Earl Claude Cabaniss of Salado, and sister Leah Gail Cabaniss Buzzard of Salado.
