Ronald Emmit Flanary, Sr.

Ronald Emmit "Ron" Flanary, Sr., 82, beloved husband, father and PawPaw was called home on Sunday, February 7, 2021 in Temple.

Funeral services for Ron will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 10:00 AM at the Dossman Funeral Home chapel in Belton with Deacon Ronnie Lastovica officiating. Burial will follow at North Belton Cemetery.

He was born on November 15, 1938 in Appalachia, Virginia to Haskell and Maude Flanary. Ron married his lifetime childhood friend, Ida Howell on July 4, 1959 in Baltimore, Maryland. They spent 62 years together and had 3 beautiful children.

Ron grew up in Baltimore, Maryland graduating from Southern High School in 1956. Afterwards, he studied at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, NYU in New York, and UCLA in California and later trained at J.E. Hanger, moving to Dallas, Texas in 1966 and eventually becoming a Certified Prosthetist. He opened and ran his own business, “Amarillo Prosthetics” for a number of years before accepting a position as a Certified Prosthetist at Scott & White in Temple, Texas where he worked for 18 years until his retirement in 1995.

Ron had many interests. He and Ida loved to go fishing, traveling, and camping in their RV. He also enjoyed playing games, listening to all types of music, as well as watching movies. He was also very creative having a knack for drawing, painting, and storytelling. The latter of the three coming in handy when telling very imaginative stories to all of his nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Ron’s family is especially grateful to the care he received from the many doctors, nurses and staff at Baylor Scott & White Health, especially Dr. Christopher Chiles, Dr. Stephen Walker, Dr. Patrick Lowry, and Trevor Young, PA.  The caring staff Hinman & Associates, especially Adam and Chimene.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his son Ronald E. Flanary,Jr.; his brother Leon Flanary, and sister Fannie Hasselburger.   He is survived by his wife Ida of Belton; daughters Patty Drake and her husband Jimmy of Belton, and Susan Frick and her husband Troy of Belton; one brother Larry Flanary and his wife Juanita of Inwood, West Virginia; and daughter-in-law Janice Flanary. Also surviving are six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association, The Cancer Research Institute or the Kidney Cancer Association or Charity of your choosing.

Our family would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for all of the love, support and prayers offered by so many during dad’s lengthy illness.   We are so thankful and grateful for all of the phone calls, texts and food offered by so many during this difficult time.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-7 PM at Dossman Funeral Home in Belton.
