Dick Sherwood

October 25, 1949 — February 25, 2023

We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved husband, father and grandfather Richard “Dick” Sherwood of Temple, TX passed on Saturday, 25 February 2023 at the age of 73 years. Dick was born on October 25, 1949, in Wilmington, DE, a son to Daniel and Elizabeth Sherwood. He was raised there along with his older brother, Daniel Edward (Ed) Sherwood. Dick graduated from Charles Dickinson High School at the age of 17 and immediately joined the army in 1967. He spent time in Germany until turning 18 when he served a year in Vietnam. He ended up at Fort Hood, TX, where he met his loving wife of almost 53 years (March 1970). He always said: "I was not born in Texas but got here as soon as I could". Upon leaving the Army Dick chose a career path in Federal Civil Service so that he could help others who were willing to serve their country while affording him the opportunity to live and travel in several different countries. He loved traveling and living overseas and the wonderful people he met along the way would forever remain in his heart. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. He felt his greatest achievement in this world was raising two great sons Mark and Michael. In 2016 he gained the daughter he had not been blessed with when Mike married Nicole Beamer. One of his greatest joys was becoming a grandfather to Mike’s son, Tyler Joseph, whom he formed a special bond with after caring for him while his mom and dad worked that first year of his life. In November Mike and Nicole gave him a granddaughter, Kinsley Paige. He was able to meet her before his passing. Family and friends where always his hearts priority, both near and far. He will surely be missed. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis "Sam" of Temple, TX, a brother, Ed (Christie) of Longboat Key, FL, sons Mark of Temple, TX, and Mike (Nicole) and two grandchildren of Morgan's Point, TX. He is now enjoying time with all those who arrived in heaven before him and were waiting to greet him Saturday. To honor Dick’s wishes there will be no formal services. We will have a celebration of life at a future date with close family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that any contributions or memorials be made to St. Jude’s or Shriners Children’s Hospital.
