Mattie Elizabeth Wesson (1932 –2023)
Mattie Elizabeth Wesson, 91, of Belton, died Monday, October 16. She passed away peacefully with loved ones around her.
Mattie was born in Belton, Texas in 1932 to Martin and Pearl Digby. She lived in Belton her entire life, graduating from Belton High School in 1949.
Mattie met the love of her life, Billy Hays Wesson, in high school. She loved to tell the story of how they met at the Teenage Canteen on the top floor of the Carnegie Library. Bill, cutting up with some of his friends, happened to throw a smoke bomb in her direction. Mattie was not impressed, as it “burned a hole in her nylons.” However, she eventually agreed to go out with him, and the two were married in a twilight ceremony on June 5, 1950 at First Christian Church of Belton.
Mattie and Bill went on to have two children, Diane and David. Family was Mattie’s whole world. They spent much of their time hunting at the deer lease, going on memorable family vacations, and always celebrated the holidays together, as a family.
Mattie dedicated 47 years of service to People’s National Bank, later known as Compass Bank, in Belton. Throughout those years, she primarily served as Head Bookkeeper and Director of Customer Service. She kept in touch with several of her bank friends over the years and looked forward to their catch-up lunches.
By far though, Mattie’s favorite role was being “Nonnie” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. There was seldom an activity, performance, or sporting event that she missed. She treasured her time with her five grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She was often the first call if someone was sick, and she would drop everything she was doing to bring over a batch of her magic potato soup.
Mattie was an active member of First Christian Church in Belton. She grew up in the church and served on various committees and in many leadership roles throughout her life. She was a part of the Disciple’s Women and served as both Deacon and Elder of the church. Mattie also served in many capacities on the Church Board of Directors, including Treasurer and Chairman of the Board. She was honored with the Saints Among Us recognition for her dedication to the church. She lived her life with a servant’s heart and positive spirit.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents Martin and Pearl Digby, husband Bill Wesson, and sister Jeannine Blair.
Mattie is survived by her daughter Diane Pressley and husband Michael, son David Wesson and wife Bekie, grandchildren Clent Ruehl and wife Alissa, Blayn Scott and wife Lorri, Taylor Ragsdale and husband Jordan, Brady Wesson and wife Bethany, Riley Wesson, and numerous great grandchildren. Additional survivors include her brother Dwayne and wife JoAnn, sisters Gale Cosper and Rita Locklin, brother-in-law John Wesson and wife Gretchen, and a score of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by lifelong best friend and “partner in crime,” Marjorie Knight and children, as well as Jay Garrett, whom she welcomed into the family and considered a son, his wife Sandy, and children.
Memorials may be made to Enhabit Hospice or Helping Hands Ministry.
