He was born to William Hill Giles and Mildred A. Weigand Giles in San Antonio, TX on July 13, 1934, as an only child. His first taste for flying came at the young age of 12, in a biplane with a pilot who shared his name.
July 23, 1955, Gerry married Jane H. Giles and had Terry Warrington, Cheri Nichols, Debbie Mullenix, William Giles, and Gerry Giles, II. "GDad" was lovingly known to 9 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
Gerry served in the United States Air Force for 29 years, retiring as Lt. Colonel. Serving his country during the Korean conflict and Vietnam War, he was stationed across the United States taking his family with him. He was one of the first commanders to pilot the C5, Fat Albert, to the USAF fleet of military aircraft. He loved the sky and was known for saying, “Let’s kick the tires and light the fires.”
Gerry put God first, and himself last. He was a serious, dutiful man, who enjoyed all types of planes, farm equipment and any engine that could. He had two other loves, Jane, his wife and his family.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6-7 PM at Dossman Funeral Home.
He will be greatly missed, but we take comfort knowing he is in a better place with our Lord Jesus, and his beloved wife, and family. Amen.
