Gene Barnes, 77, of Temple, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025. Services will be held at 11a.m. on Wednesday, March 26 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Temple. Visitation will take place at Dossman Funeral Home in Belton, Tuesday March 25 from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 7 p.m.
Gene was born on December 9, 1947, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Felix and Myrtle Barnes. He began his working life in Temple at the family business, Barnes Jewelry, where he worked alongside his parents. He later devoted many years of service to the Bell County Tax Appraisal District, Temple Annex, where he retired as Chief Tax Appraiser. He also enjoyed teaching tax appraisal classes across Texas, mentoring and supporting new professionals in the field.
A man of deep faith, Gene was a charter member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Temple and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3444. His devotion to his community, his church, and his family was the foundation of his life.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Linda Barnes, and their daughter, Lisa Shed, and her husband, Kody. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Rachel Edelbrock and her husband, Joseph, and to Grant Shed. He especially cherished his role as “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren and great-granddaughter, Emberly Edelbrock. Pop Pop was always there, and never missed their events or special occasions. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda Gersbach and her husband, Harry, and Juanita Ingriola and her husband, Joe, along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Gene enjoyed dancing with his wife, woodworking and had a passion for cars. He was always happy to lend a helping hand to family and friends. Gene adored his daughter Lisa and was regularly seen at her business, Lisa’s Dance Connection, where he loved visiting with students and parents. His support and craftsmanship were a constant presence behind the scenes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Hospice House, mailing address 5235 Toll Bridge Road, Belton, Texas 76513 or St. Jude's Children’s Research Hospital.
