Edward Harold Speck entered his heavenly home February 1, 2025, in Temple, TX. There will be a Celebration of Life Service on February 6, 2025, at 11:00am at First Baptist Belton, with a visitation beforehand from 10:00am-11:00am with the family.
Edward was born on January 1, 1937, in Davenport, Oklahoma, to Elmer and Carrie Speck. He was the baby of the family with two older brothers and three older sisters. He lived in Davenport, Oklahoma, where he lettered in baseball, basketball and football. He loved telling stories of his time as an athlete and for many years challenged kids and grandkids to races! He started dating Phyllis Jenkins as a sophomore in high school though it all started at their kindergarten birthday parties! After scholarship offers from Arizona State and Oklahoma State, he chose to follow Phyllis to Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in January of 1960.
Edward married Phyllis Jenkins on August 22, 1958, and they were married for 65 years. Daughter, Shelli Speck Hellinghausen was born on August 22, 1962, and daughter Traci Speck Davis was born on September 6, 1965.
He worked in the oil field while going to college and then taught physical education for 4 years in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the summers he worked as a camp counselor at Camp Kemo. He worked for National Supply and then entered the chemical business as a salesman for Champion. Ed worked for Champion for 17 years and left as a Regional Manager. He finished his career as Vice President of North American sales for Tretolite Chemical Company. The oil business took Edward and his family to Cushing, OK., Moore, OK., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Midland, TX., St. Louis, MO., and Houston, TX. In life and in business, Ed was known for saying “Give me the ball” because he liked to make things happen!
Edward was a square dance caller in his younger years and started a square dance club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, called the Speck-Taculars and they are going strong today. Edward and Phyllis loved to dance and were jitterbug champions in college and we know that they are dancing together on streets of gold.
Edward loved his family and loved the Lord with all of his heart! We rejoice that he is whole in the presence of his Savior and reunited with his true love!
He is survived by his two daughters, Shelli Hellinghausen (husband Marc), and Traci Davis (husband Brad). He is also survived by 4 grandchildren Corey Rogan (wife Audrey), Nikki Rogan, Kali Dick (husband J.T.), and Logan Hellinghausen (wife Riley), and 12 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis Jenkins Speck, his parents, and his brothers and sisters.
Memorial contributions can be made to Family Promise of Bell County which is a ministry to the homeless where Edward served alongside Phyllis as she coordinated the ministry for 4 years at their local church, First Baptist Belton. The address is 1411 E. Ave. N., Temple, TX. 76501.
