Cheryl Bernadette Berry, 78 of Belton, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at her home while surrounded by her three daughters and two grandsons.

Cheryl, known as “Berna” to her family, was preceded in death by her parents Author Loyd Berry and Billie Louise Fielder as well as her sister Linda Joy Ellis.

She is survived by her three daughters, Stacy Ingram (Rex Blackwell) of Salado, Tracy McLoud (Roxann Patrick) of Belton, Teresa Siegfried (Monty Brown) of Belton; grandchildren Justin Siegfried (Alex Weatherall) and Conner Siegfried; sister Wanda Smith and brother Steve Berry; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Cheryl was born in Belton, Texas on February 8, 1946. She was the youngest of three girls and a big sister to her brother who was nine years her junior.  She was a go-getter from a young age and had fond memories of growing up out in the country near Youngsport where she enjoyed horseback riding, playing with her sister Wanda, searching for rattlesnakes, fishing, and helping her mother gather eggs and milk the cows.

She attended school in Salado where she was one of only 14 students in her class. In 1964, when she was a senior in high school, she met and married Jerry McLoud. They were married for 24 years and had three daughters: Stacy, Tracy and Teresa. When the girls were young, Cheryl enjoyed being a homemaker and sewing special clothes like Easter dresses for her girls as well as her niece Kathy.

When all of her girls started elementary school, Cheryl attended Temple Junior College in order to follow in her mother’s steps and work in the medical field. She spent some time working at Crestview Manor Nursing Home where her mother also worked. Following that, she and her sister Wanda worked together at King’s Daughters Hospital, where she also obtained her LVN, and later at the VA hospital in Temple.  Cheryl often talked of the time she spent as a scrub nurse in the surgical department. She went on to obtain her degree and RN license from McLennan Community College in 1986.

After she left the VA, Cheryl spent some time working for Texas Home Health, where she decided to open up her own home health agency. With the help of her family and her former husband and business partner, Frank Springer, she opened Heights Home Health in 1996. She worked tirelessly to grow and expand, employing numerous family members over the years, including her sister Wanda who helped open two new offices. Even her oldest sister Linda Ellis worked at Heights Home Health after she retired from doing hair, as well as her daughter Teresa Siegfried who continues to own and operate the business. By the time Cheryl retired in 2017, Heights Home Health had expanded to three offices across the area and was one of the leading home health agencies in Central Texas.

Cheryl was a hard worker, but she also enjoyed playing just as much. She had a competitive spirit and loved playing cards, dice, ping pong, dominos and pool. She also enjoyed going fishing and boating and spending time with her two grandsons as well as her beloved dog, Angie.

Later in life, Cheryl most enjoyed spending time with family and hosting get-togethers. After her mother’s passing, her home became the central place for family to gather on holidays and special occasions. She was proud of her beautiful home and yard and many wonderful memories were made there.

Cheryl was a fearless trailblazer and could accomplish anything once she set her mind to do it. She was a solid rock to her family, always there to lean on or offer a step up. Her quick wit and ready laugh made her a joy to be around. Though her absence leaves a great hole in many people’s lives and hearts, her spirit of joy and strength will live on in all who had the pleasure to know her.
