Belton---Funeral services for Velma Lea Burks Hood, 80, of Temple, will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday August 3, 2011 at the Dossman Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Joe Baisden and Rev. Joe Daggs officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Nolanville. Mrs. Hood went to be with her Lord Sunday evening, July 31, 2011 at a Temple Nursing Home. She was born November 30, 1930, in the Prairie Dell Community, Bell County, Texas to Ben and Letha Burks. She was Baptist, having been baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Belton in 1947. She attended school in Prairie Dell and Belton and the University of Arizona in Tucson. Velma married Thomas R. (Tuff) Hood in Belton, January 24, 1949. They lived in the Central Texas area, West Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, and relocated to Texas after retirement. She worked for Potts Hardware, KTEM/KCEN and an accounting firm in Sweetwater, Texas and Gallup, New Mexico where she taught accounting. She was the Assistant Manager of Southern Arizona H&R Block until retiring in 1967. Mrs. Hood was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Dorothy LaNell and Letha Faye. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, brothers and spouses, F. N. and Darlene Hood of Harker Heights and Billy and Brenda Hood of Killeen and numerous nieces and nephews. Nephews who will be honored to serve as pallbearers are Troy Hood, Terry hood, Tommy Hood, Randy Hood, Johnny Townsend, and Curtis Townsend. Honorary Pallbearers are David Hood and Jim Murphy. The Family will receive friends for visitation Tuesday evening from 6-8 Pm at the Dossman Funeral Home in Belton. Memorials may be made to Scott and White Hospice.
