Funeral services for Norman Cockrell, 90, of Belton, will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, September 5, 2013, at the Dossman Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Joe Baisden officiating. Burial will follow at the Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Dossman Funeral Home. Mr. Cockrell died Monday, September 2, 2013 at a Harker Heights Nursing Center. Mr. Cockrell was born July 26, 1923, in Elijah, the son of Roy and Laura (Oswalt) Cockrell. He moved to Bell County at a very young age. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army. He farmed in the Sparta Community until the Belton Dam was built. Norman never married but was a father to his family all his life. He was a member of the Belton Church of Christ. He was inducted into the Central Texas Cowboy Ring of Honor. He was a member of the Central Texas Cattleman's Association. Survivors include two brothers George and wife Joan Cockrell of Oakwood and Dick and wife Carolyn Cockrell of Garland; three sisters, Laura Cockrell Griffin and husband Lou Griffin of Belton, Elizabeth McLane and husband Drayton McLane, Jr. and Margaret Pazik and husband Tony Pazik of Pflugerville and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Belton Church of Christ, the Medina Children's Home or the Cherokee Children's Home.
