Private funeral services for Nelson Gene "Sassy" Cowan, 70, of Belton, at the Dossman Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roscoe Harrison officiating. Private burial followed at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with Military Honors. Mr. Cowan died Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at a Temple Hospital. Mr. Cowan was born October 24, 1943 in Austin, the son of Kermit and Lorene (Breeden) Cowan. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He worked as a housing manager for the Department of the Navy for 35 years, retiring June 30, 2014. He was a Baptist. Mr. Cowan was preceded in death by one brother Russell Cowan. Survivors include one son, Kaipo Cowan and wife Vanessa of Abilene; two daughters Kellie Mendoza and husband Mark of Pflugerville and Kainoa Warnock and husband Tony of Yuma, AZ; three sisters Mary Ann Hodges of Lometa, Dorothy Coppin of Belton and Drew Hunter of Killeen and five grandchildren Justin, Benjamin, Deegan, Corbin and Reese.
