Alvis Ferrell Bailey

Alvis was born September 28, 1923 in Wells, Texas to Burgin Orachie Bailey and Maurine (Cox) Bailey. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Force, 1942-1945, during World War II in the Pacific. Alvis married the love of his life, Nelda Cox, July 15, 1945 in Belton. They were life long residents of Temple and Bartlett, where Alvis was a car salesman before his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW, serving as Commander of American Legion Post #183 in Barlett and was a current member of American Legion Post #133 in Temple. Alvis belonged to the SPJST Lodge 80 in Holland, Texas. He was president of the Barlett ISD School Board in the 70's. Alvis enjoyed bowling and served as secretary of the Temple Men's Bowling League for many years. He loved to travel to Cloud Croft, NM to spend summers until he couldn't travel. Alvis was a member of Oak Park United Methodist Church in Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bill Bailey, a sister Patsy Lisenbe and a great granddaughter Addison Brooke Steglich. Alvis is survived by his wife of 69 years Nelda, one son Donald Bailey and wife Shari of Temple, two daughters Janice Wentrcek and husband Garland of Belton and Joyce Steglich and husband Alan of Temple; two brothers Grady Bailey and wife Anna and Robert Bailey both of Belton; two sisters Lydia Baise of Terrell and Margaret Allsup and husband Leo of Waco. Grandchildren Sherry Kell and husband David of Bartlett, Steven Wentrcek and fiancé Liz of Bartlett; Robert Steglich and wife Courtney of Corpus Christi, Susan Seidl and husband Randy of Morgans Point, Ryan Steglich and wife Cassaundra of Belton; Kristopher Bailey and wife Nicole of New York, Angela Strahl and husband Joe of New York and Shawn Bailey of Temple. Great Grandchildren Zach, Lauren and Allison Janke; Rance and Katlynn Seidl, Tristan and Gavin Steglich, Jordyn Steglich; Andrea, Madison, and Makenzie Bailey; Austin and Preston Strahl. And many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family requests memorials be made to Oak Park United Methodist Church, 5505 South 31st Street, Temple, Texas 76502 or the charity of their choice
