Charley Powell

Charles (Charley) Caruth Powell, Jr. was born October 5, 1939 in Temple, Texas to Charles and Nancy (Tincy) Powell of Gatesville. Charley was a 1957 graduate of Gatesville High School where he was the captain of the basketball team and served as Senior Class President. He moved on to Ft. Worth where he attended, and graduated from, Texas Christian University (TCU). While at TCU Charley became a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, serving as its Consul (President) his senior year. Upon graduation from TCU in 1961, he married Peggy Preston of Denison, Texas. Charley and Peggy moved to Belton in the summer of 1962 where he began a long career as proprietor of Powell Supply Co. Charley was an active and loyal member of the Belton community for the remainder of his life. In 1994, he was selected as Man of the Year by the Belton Chamber of Commerce. In 1999, Charley was named Beltonian of the Year. He was a member and Past President of the Belton Lions Club and he always enjoyed appearing in their annual Lion's Club Minstrel shows. In 1965, he was President of the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce and was named Jaycee Young Man of the Year. Charley served as a member and President of the Belton ISD Board of Trustees for seven years from 1968 to 1974. In 1995, he received a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor where he was a member of the Board of Trustees. Charley was a former Mayor of the City of Belton from 1993 to 1999 at which time he fostered and nurtured a sister city agreement with Ebino, Japan. In 1996 he was presented with the American Hometown Leadership Award from the National Association of Towns and Townships. In recognition for his long and dedicated service, the City of Belton named a street, Powell Avenue, in his honor. Charley took great pride and delight in his role as husband, father, grandfather and friend. A devoted family man and a member of the First Baptist Church of Belton, Charley is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Peggy, his three children, Mark Powell and his wife Julie of Dallas, Texas; Bryan Powell and his wife Mary of Dallas, Texas; and Paige Rendon and her husband Mark of Belton, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Kelsey Alexandra Powell and Benjamin Harrison Powell of Dallas; Cassidy Alexandra Rendon, Blake Andrew Rendon and Alex Walker Rendon of Belton; and Charleston (Charlie) Olivia Powell of Dallas, due this spring. Mr. Powell is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Tincy Powell of Gatesville as well as his brother Captain William Elmo Powell of Gatesville who was killed in action while piloting an F-4D over Vietnam in 1968. A Memorial Service is planned for Charley at 2 PM on Monday, February 23 at the First Baptist Church of Belton 506 N. Main Street Belton with family visitation to follow. The family asks that memorials be made to The William Elmo Powell Memorial Scholarship Fund at Texas Christian University in Ft.
