Thelma Jean Myers McCracken

Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam,

Where the deer and the antelope play,

Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,

And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Thelma Myers McCracken was born in Buffalo, Wyoming on January 2, 1946 to Jacob Arthur Myers and Mary Elizabeth Kraen Myers. Residing in Belton, Texas, she passed away with family by her side on April 1, 2016 at the age of 70.

Growing up in Buffalo, Wyoming near the Big Horn Mountains, Thelma loved nature and wildlife. She spent her early years on Kendrick Cattle Company outside of Sheridan, Wyoming and ranches in Texas. She was quite the cowgirl, riding horses, working cattle and feeding cowboys in the bunkhouse.

Thelma had a passion for working with people. She worked for Safeway for many years and later, the City of Belton.

She was caring and loved to help people. Whether buying groceries for the elderly, mowing their yards or just stopping by for a visit, she always put others before herself. On special days, she would deliver homemade candy and hot rolls to neighbors near and far.

Thelma was an inspiration to all who knew her. She believed anything was possible and worked hard every day of her life. The proudest day of her life was becoming a grandmother. She encouraged her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter to “Dream Big!” Her legacy will live on through her beloved granddaughter, Zara River Lamb.

Thelma has gone home to where the buffalo roam. She was our hero. She will be greatly missed.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Ann Harvey. She is survived by her devoted husband of 23 years, Freddie McCracken, his daughter Jean and husband James Scott, her son Bucky Lamb, daughter-in-law Caasi Smith Lamb, granddaughter Zara River Lamb, brothers Don Kraen, Coog Myers, Doug Myers, Willie Myers, Herman Myers and sisters Johanna Gaskill, Kathy Snyder and Janie Maya.

Thelma often said, “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened!” A celebration of Thelma’s life will be held with family and friends in late springtime on the land she loved.
