Manervia Z. Herrington

January 12, 1926 — September 26, 2016

Manervia Zelma Jackson Herrington passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord Jesus on, Monday, September 26, 2016 at 7:30 am. She was born the 12th of January, 1926, to Richard Leo Jackson and Winnie Bell Curb Jackson at her family’s home on Rt. 1, near Salado, Texas.

Manervia married B.E. (Red) Herrington on May 6, 1944, in Killeen, Texas. While Red served overseas during World War II, Manervia stayed with her family and helped take care of her younger brother, Wayne, and her mother. She also worked part time in Clements Drug Store in Belton and Anderson’s Ice Cream Factory in Temple. When Red returned from overseas after the war, they settled down in Belton, Texas, to raise a family. They had three children, Galen Ken Herrington, born October 7, 1948, Darla Kay Herrington Hill, born April 24, 1952, and Alan Lewis Herrington, born January 18, 1954.

Manervia and Red were long time members of Miller Heights Baptist Church in Belton and were very active in the church. She taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir. She and Red had many active community programs they participated in including their Sportsmen’s Club and Nursing Home Ministry.

They both were also members for many years of the gospel singing group, the Fellowship Singers, travelling all over the state performing concerts.

Manervia was an accomplished artist, poet and songwriter. She was a member of the National Poetry Hall of Fame and had many of her poems published. She had several patriotic songs inducted into the Congressional Library. Manervia was an avid sportswoman as well. Many were the occasions that she boasted of having caught the biggest fish or hunted the largest deer. She had a zest for life and loved the outdoors and spending time with her family.

Manervia was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Delmer Leo Jackson and Earnest Oates Jackson; and by her sister Opal Winnie Jackson Brooks. She is survived by one brother, Wayne Jackson of Belton Texas, her son and daughter-in-law, Galen and Mary Herrington of Gatesville, Texas, her daughter, Darla Kay Hill of Georgetown, Texas, and her son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Pam Ernest Herrington of Belton, Texas. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, Thursday, September 29, 2016, at Dossman Funeral Home in Belton, Texas. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 30, 2016, at Miller Heights Baptist Church in Belton, Texas with Pastor Justin Childers officiating. The gravesite service and interment will be at the Herrington Cemetery in Killeen/Harker Heights following the funeral.
