Maloy Herbert

July 10, 1919 — December 5, 2016

Floyd Maloy Herbert, age 97, left for his heavenly home December 5, 2016. He was born July 10, 1919 in Bearden, Arkansas to DeWitt and Mary Adams Herbert.

A celebration of his life will be December 10, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Dossman Funeral Home with Pastors Mark Sibley and Justin Childers officiating. Burial will follow at North Belton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on December 9th at Dossman Funeral Home.

In 1948, he married the girl God sent him, Merlene Watson of Goldthwaite. They were happily married for 68 years. Maloy loved his family deeply, his son Dennis Herbert and wife Annette of Salado, daughters Peggy Herbert of Moody, Linda Herrington and husband Rick of Belton, and Cory O’Carroll and husband Kevin of Granbury. He was blessed with 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents DeWitt and Mary Herbert, sisters Nadine Young, Ray Votaw, Tommie Ramm, brothers D.L. Herbert, Edward Herbert, and grandson Jared Dunnahoo.

Maloy accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior during WWII on a south pacific island. He was ordained as a deacon at Nolanville Baptist Church in 1954. He was a retired deacon of Miller Heights Baptist Church in Belton. Maloy’s handshake was his word. He was a man of character, integrity, honesty, disciplined, committed, resilient, and he had a heart of gold. And today he has a crown of gold.

Maloy was a leader in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and after volunteering for the Army during WWII and then in the Korean War. After serving his country in the military he then served DoD in a civilian service position at Dyess Airforce Base in Abilene and then Fort Hood where he retired after 27 years.

As a hobby, he enjoyed and wrote poetry for many years and received numerous awards for his talent. In 1991 he was awarded first place from the Poetry Society of Texas and a Golden Award from World of Poetry in 1989. He also wrote a book about his life entitled “a wickless candle”, published in 2009.
